Tomahawk

August 9-16, 2008

Submitted by Bobby H.

Another great week that was filled with memories. On Sunday we had 4 adults and 1 adult called out for OA elections. On Monday the troop did it first BMX biking course and gave it rave reviews. Seth got the most air; Joey and Ricky wiped out but only needed bandages. Andy G. and Pete D. found their first Tomahawk geo-cache. Mark J. and Philip liked their day trip white water kayaking in the Brune River. In the evening, we “threw” the water polo game against the Prior Lake troop so we could play nuke ‘em on the volleyball court. On Tuesday Andy caught a “ginormous” crappie which we cooked over the evening campfire. Mark J. then drank (or perhaps ate?) the fish water and did not get sick. Ended up being the tastiest item eaten at Tomahawk that week! Wednesday was the day that we excelled at finger-carving. Two boys cut themselves but only 1 needed a trip to the Rice Lake ER for stitches. On Wednesday, we had a failed impeachment proceeding of our SPL Mark J. The steaks and potatoes over the campfire were the best ever. Thursday morning we saw the most rain but we still made a lot of progress on our erosion control at the back of the Comanche site. Over the course of the week we put down three truck loads of rock and mixed 1 load of dried horse dung into the soil. On Friday, the five first year Scouts completed Brownsea and they all got their Second Class BORs. We are proud of their achievements. Every patrol put on an evening skit around the evening campfire. Right away Saturday morning, we took down camp and got on the road home. Those lucky enough to not have to drive took naps on the way home. Tomahawk '08 by the numbers as reported by Rich Phillips, T449 ASM: 22 scouts, 11 adults, 2 wet days, 5 sunny days, 56 merit badges complete, 97 segments complete, 2 High Adventure participants (white water kayak), 5 Brownsea participants, 11 rank advancements (5 of 5 first year scouts to 2nd class!), 5 troop members tapped for OA (4 scouts + 1 adult), 29 service hours including 3 loads of rock and 1 "pick-m-up truck" load of horse dung, 547 camp meals served, 1 big (12.5 inch) and 1 bigger (13.5 inch) crappie caught in lake Nielsen, 1 trip to Rice Lake ER (finger carving), 7 relaxing campfires.
